Step up to 61 litres without stepping up to a dedicated electrical supply. The V61 GXR plugs into any standard 13A socket, reaches 1300°C with its double-insulated chamber, and comes with a furniture set and free UK delivery included.

  • 61-litre chamber: One-third more capacity than the V46 — meaningful for anyone producing regularly or firing larger pieces.
  • Dual-layer insulation: Two layers of micropore insulation plus a fibre blanket give the GXR superior heat retention and faster, more efficient firings.
  • 13A household plug: No rewiring, no electrician. Straight into a standard socket and ready to fire.
  • 1300°C maximum: Full range of earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain firings.
  • KCR32C controller included: Pre-set programmes plus custom ramp-and-hold control. WiFi upgrade available.

Which Kilncare Ikon kiln should I buy?

For most home potters, the Ikon V61 GXR is the one to buy: 61 litres, 1300°C, and it runs off a standard 13A plug, so no electrician. Choose the V46 if space is tight, the V61E for earthenware only, the V61 or V61X if you want 1315°C and can be hardwired, and the V80 or V100 only for volume.

Kilncare build the whole Ikon range in Stoke-on-Trent, and every model shares the same KCR32C controller and 3-year warranty. What actually changes between them is chamber size, top temperature, and whether you need an electrician. Here is the full range side by side.

Ikon V80 80 L 6 kW 25A hardwired 1315°C £4,899
Ikon V100 100 L 7.3 kW 30.5A hardwired 1315°C £5,279

Which Kilncare Ikon kilns run off a normal 13A plug?

The Ikon V46, V61E and V61 GXR all draw 12.6A and plug into an ordinary 13A socket — no rewiring, no electrician. The V61 (15A), V61X (21.4A), V80 (25A) and V100 (30.5A) all need a dedicated hardwired supply, which typically costs £200–£500 to have installed.

This is usually the question that decides it. A kiln on a normal plug can go in a garage, a shed or a spare room without any electrical work at all. If you want to see what a firing would actually cost you on your own tariff, our kiln running-cost calculator has the Ikon V61 built in as a preset.

Can a Kilncare Ikon fire stoneware?

Yes — every Ikon except the V61E. The V61E tops out at 1200°C, which covers earthenware and most mid-fire glazes but not stoneware. The V61 GXR reaches 1300°C and the V46, V61, V61X, V80 and V100 all reach 1315°C, comfortably above the 1260–1280°C most stoneware bodies need.

What's the difference between the Ikon V61, V61E, V61X and V61 GXR?

All four hold 61 litres in the same 416mm × 445mm chamber — the difference is heat and how you power it. The V61E is 2.9kW on a 13A plug but stops at 1200°C. The V61 (3.6kW) and the V61X (5kW) both reach 1315°C but must be hardwired. The V61 GXR is 2.9kW on a 13A plug and still reaches 1300°C, because the double micropore insulation and GXR ECO lid hold the heat in rather than burning more power to replace it.

If you are still weighing it up, our guide to buying a pottery kiln in the UK walks through sizing, siting and wiring from the beginning — or just call us on 01202 144142 and we will work through it with you.

How much does a Kilncare Ikon cost to run?

A 2.9kW Ikon V61 GXR draws at most 2.9 kWh for every hour it is switched on, so on the July–September 2026 Ofgem capped rate of 26.11p per kWh that is at most about 76p an hour. Real firings cost less than that ceiling, because the elements cycle off once the kiln reaches its target temperature and only pulse to hold it there.

How much less depends on your firing schedule, how tightly the kiln is packed and how well the room holds heat, which is why we would rather show you the working than quote you a single number. Our kiln running-cost calculator takes your own tariff and firing schedule and shows every step of the sum.

More Capacity, Same Convenience

The V61 GXR is for potters who've already decided they need more space inside the kiln — whether that's because the V46 fills up too quickly, they're working on larger sculptural pieces, or they want the headroom to fire bigger batches without running multiple cycles.

Where the GXR distinguishes itself from the standard V61E is the insulation. Two layers of micropore board combined with a fibre blanket give the GXR chamber significantly better heat retention — meaning it reaches temperature more efficiently, holds it more consistently, and uses less electricity per firing cycle. Over time, that makes a real difference to running costs.

Like the rest of the Ikon range, the V61 GXR runs from a standard 13A household socket. No rewiring, no specialist installation, no barriers between you and your first firing. The KCR32C controller handles everything from basic pre-set programmes to complex custom ramp-and-hold sequences, and the optional WiFi upgrade lets you monitor firings remotely via Kilncare's GATEway platform.

The V61 GXR Is Right For You If

  • You're outgrowing the V46 or a similarly sized kiln
  • You work on larger pieces that need more chamber height or diameter
  • You want to fire bigger batches less frequently
  • You want the best insulation available in the Ikon range for running efficiency
  • You need a proper home kiln without a dedicated electrical circuit

What the GXR Brings to the Table

Dual-Layer Micropore Insulation

The GXR's chamber is insulated with two layers of micropore board and a fibre blanket — a step up from standard single-layer insulation. This dramatically reduces heat loss through the kiln walls, resulting in more even temperatures throughout the chamber, faster heat-up times, and lower electricity consumption per firing. It's the detail that separates a good kiln from a great one at this price point.

61-Litre Chamber

The extra 15 litres over the V46 translates to meaningfully more loading flexibility — taller vases, more shelving levels, or simply a bigger batch of smaller pieces. The chamber is designed with a round footprint to maximise usable space and ensure consistent heat distribution around your work from the elements down the full height of the load.

KCR32C Digital Controller

The same reliable controller as the V46, included as standard. Pre-loaded with common firing programmes and fully programmable for custom schedules. The WiFi upgrade (KCR32C WiFi) is available separately and connects your kiln to Kilncare's GATEway monitoring platform — so you can check temperatures, pause, or stop a firing remotely without being in the room.
